Blessing of the Business

A Faith-Centered Alternative (and Complement) to Ribbon-Cutting Ceremonies

It is common for Chambers of Commerce to host ribbon-cuttings for grand openings and anniversaries. Our DMV Christian Chamber of Commerce, Inc. will also offer a Blessing of the Business to our members. A dedicated time to pray over your building or workspace, your leadership and staff, your customers and community, and the work of your hands. We anoint with oil as a Biblical symbol of consecration, protection, and the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit, asking God for wisdom, favor, safety, and good success.

Why a Blessing of the Business?

In Scripture, God delights to ‘establish the work of our hands’ (Psalm 90:17) and to bless our labor done in His name (Colossians 3:23–24). Anointing with oil is a physical sign of being set apart to God’s purposes (Exodus 30:22–29; 1 Samuel 10:1). The early church prayed and anointed with oil (Mark 6:13; James 5:14–15) as a visible expression of dependence on the Lord. Dedicating a business and its place of work to God follows the biblical pattern of consecrating spaces and callings to Him (Genesis 28:18; 1 Kings 8).

Scripture Foundations

  • Psalm 121; Psalm 91: God’s protection over His people.

  • Numbers 6:24–26: The Priestly Blessing over God’s people.

  • Deuteronomy 28:1–12: Blessing on obedience and the work of your hands.

  • Joshua 1:8: Prosperity and success as we meditate on and obey God’s Word.

  • Psalm 23:5: You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

  • Psalm 90:17: Establish the work of our hands.

  • Proverbs 16:3: Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.

  • 1 Kings 8 (2 Chronicles 6–7): Dedication prayer over a place for God’s name.

  • Mark 6:12-13: The disciples anointed the sick with oil and prayed.

  • Acts 16:14-15, 40: Lydia’s household (a marketplace leader) becomes a base for ministry.

  • Romans 16:3: Priscilla and Aquila (tentmakers) as business leaders in gospel mission.

  • Colossians 3:23–24: Work as service to the Lord.

  • James 5:14-15: Elders pray over and anoint in the name of the Lord.

  7. Commissioning & Declaration: A responsive blessing, inviting God to ‘establish the work of your hands.’

  8. Photos/Media (Optional): Pair with a ribbon-cutting or media moment to celebrate publicly.

A Prayer of Dedication

“Father, in the name of Jesus, we dedicate this business to You. We commit our plans to the LORD (Proverbs 16:3) and ask that You establish them. May Your favor be upon us and establish the work of our hands (Psalm 90:17). We ask for wisdom, integrity, and excellence in every decision (James 1:5; Colossians 3:23–24). Protect this team and this space (Psalm 91). Let this business be a blessing to employees, customers, and our community, and may all we do honor Christ. Amen.”

A Prayer of Blessing

The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn His face toward you and give you peace. (Numbers 6:24–26)

Response from attendees: Amen! We receive this blessing in Jesus’ name.

Safety & Accessibility

  • Anointing Oil: We use a small amount of olive oil. If anyone prefers a touch-free blessing, we will simply pray without oil.
